Tricks and treats for your plumbing
For the vast majority of us, the terms trick or treat enters our vocabulary one per year on Halloween. When presented with the choice, we invariably choose the treat, why wouldn’t you? Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the way in which many treat their plumbing year-round. As relining experts, we were naturally biased towards relining being the best solution for most drain pipe & sewer related issues. But if you could avoid the tricks that cause these issues altogether, you should.
We have detailed some of the most common tricks we unknowingly play on our plumbing and how to avoid them, treating your pipes and your wallet this spooky season.
Your toilet system simply isn’t designed to dispose of anything but toilet paper and human waste. By flushing anything else down your loo, you may be innocently playing a nasty little trick on your plumbing. The most common materials we see incorrectly disposed of in the loo’s Sydney’s include nappies and paper towels, although some more inventive and ultimately damaging things have been known to make the flush in the US. Ultimately, anything other than loo roll and you know what can gather and block your system anywhere from the basin to the boundary, causing an immediate issue in the form of a blocked drain and the potential risk for further problems down the track depending on what you flush and what else is happening down below. So treat your toilet and think before you flush.
One of the most common causes of drains and pipes being damaged are tree roots (you can learn all about how they do this here). However, you’d be excused for not immediately thinking of your plumbing when planting a lovely new fern in your back garden. But not checking it’s proximity to the sewer line and sewer inspection point could be costly in years to come. The roots will eventually start to attack the pipes which are vulnerable for a number of reasons and not having quick, easy access to your sewer inspection point could prevent smaller issues being easily solved. Treat the future you and be vigilant with your planting.
Homes are costly to build and maintain, but cutting corners usually bites you in the bum and costs you more in the long run. Using a professional plumber is essential whether your building or renovating and will ensure the long term health of your plumbing. Basics such as backfilling, depth, fall and pipe size are essential and shouldn’t be overlooked. Treat yourself, do it right and do it once.
Like the toilet, the kitchen sink is not a trash bin and should only be used to dispose of liquids. Fats and oils used in cooking are not typically water-soluble and one of the most common causes of blocked drains. Whilst it may seem easy enough to pour them down the drain, out of sight and forget about them, they may not be out of mind for very long. Fats and oil solidify when they cool and can stick to pretty much anything in your drain, often causing blockages on their own or exacerbating other existing issues. Treat your pipes and keep them on a fat-free diet.
The science that resides in your plumbing is delicate and fragile, as are your pipes. Unfortunately, many of the chemicals that we use to “clean” can actually harm the structural integrity of the pipes and impact the chemistry that lies within them. Using harmful chemicals over time can corrode your pipes causing leaks and worse, defects that tree roots can exploit! Don’t be fooled by thinking you’re treating your plumbing to a corrosive cocktail, because the trick is on you.
Treats are always preferred, regardless of the date, so ensure you’re treating your plumbing correctly year-round to avoid being tricked into a needlessly expensive cleanup job.
