We get it – not everyone is going to be as passionate about relining as we are.

However, we also know, that many of you may want more info. Below there is a collection of content, designed to educate you on the ins & outs of relining, whilst giving an outline of our industry and the technology in more detail. If that’s not enough, get in touch, we could talk about relining all day!

The WaterMark Certification Scheme has regulated the use of plumbing and drainage products in Australia since 1988, with only authorised products deemed legally fit for use in plumbing and drainage installations. Until recently, relining products sat outside of the WaterMark scheme, with no accreditation required or regulating authority managing the materials or the manner in which they are utilised in Australia.

As of November 2018, it is a legal requirement for reliners to use WaterMark approved products, installed as per the Plumbing Standard of Australia AS3500. Products and techniques that sit outside of these guidelines, are now deemed unsuitable for use within Australia.

At Sydney Relining, the quality of the products and systems we utilise has been of high priority throughout our 30 years looking after Sydney’s plumbing, always ensuring they are of the highest standard and deliver great value for money for our customers. It therefore goes without saying that Sydney Relining happily guarantee that all of our products and systems are approved within the WaterMark Certification Scheme. With many systems and products available, developed and distributed by brands across the globe (check out – Key things to consider when choosing your product), we’re only too glad that our niche industry is being more strictly regulated moving forwards.

However, as the consumer you must be aware that the scheme is enforced by the state and territory plumbing administrations at the point of installation, not at sale. Therefore products without WaterMark certification can be purchased openly, without any penalty to the supplier. This makes it imperative that you ask your plumber or reliner and insure the products they’re using are certified.

You can find out more about what products and specifications require certification in the WaterMark Schedule of Specifications and if you have any questions or queries, give one of our relining experts a call anytime.

In years gone by, recurring issues with your plumbing would more than likely required your plumber to dig down to find the problem and more often than not, replace the entire section of pipe that was being troublesome. However, with todays superior investigative and relining technology, why would you?

Pipe relining is the preferred and superior option. You may be thinking ‘well they’re going to say that’, which is completely understandable. But here is why;

  • Time – Pipe relining often takes less than half the time of traditional methods and depending on the location, can be exceedingly more efficient.
  • Disruption (or lack of) – Disruptions of day to day living is one thing, but disruptions to the surrounding structural environment can be devastating in the long term. Relining is a completely non-invasive method from start to finish for both the home and those living in it.
  • Cash – It only makes sense that a lack of mass excavation requires less labour, over less time. So in turn, relining will typically cost you less, not to mention a longer life expectancy for the newly relined pipe than a replacement.

The efficiency of the process both in terms of time and money. Along with a manufacturer’s product guarantee of up to 50 years, makes relining a no-brainer – duh!

Pipe relining is still somewhat of an unknown quantity for many.

Whilst at Sydney Relining we’re committed to increasing the profile and education of our profession, some of the subtleties and finer details can be difficult to grasp. Especially if you’ve never heard of relining before your plumber tells you that you need it.

This can often present problems when comparing quotes and proposals from various suppliers. How do you know if you’re comparing apples with apples, or a Valiant Charger with a Porsche?

There are a number of factors to consider, depending on the job and provider. We’ve listed the big ones below, so you’re informed when you bite the bullet and commit to a long term relining solution:

  • What reline material / product is being used? We use only the highest quality epoxy resin, make sure your quote includes the same!
  • Is relining the core business of the provider, or just an add on? The latter will often incur significant overheads, compared to a professional relining outfit.
  • Does your quote offer a guarantee? All quality relining products are insured by the manufacturer, so if this isn’t included, it should be! We offer a 20 year guarantee with all our installations.
  • Is the quote more or less than a traditional ‘dig and replace’ solution? Relining is designed to be a cheaper, more sustainable solution, so bare this in mind.

It’s often difficult to know when it’s time to reline.

The problem is typically buried by a couple of meters of dirt and you’ve only for your plumber’s word to act on. So what do you do?

As a rule, if you’ve called a plumber to fix the same problem more than once, chances are a reline solution will save time and money. Chronic drain problems covered by temporary, band-aid fixes, will always cost more than a sustainable, reline solution. Not to mention you get to cut out the agonising ritual of calling your new best mate, the plumber at 3am, only to sit there cradling a cup of decaf until they’ve plugged the leak for the next week and a half. Ultimately, you will need to either reline or replace the pipe eventually, so why not cut out the hassle and cut straight to the finish line?

Here is some simple math with some nice round numbers to illustrate the point:

Typical customer journey:

Blocked pipe identified and stop-gap solution implemented = $2,000
Problem resurfaces, more work required = $2,500
Another blockage, but this time on a bigger scale, more clean up and repairs = $3,000
Final straw, reline or replacement solution installed= $10,000

Total: $17,500

Sydney Relining customer journey:

Sydney Relining inspect and quote on a reline solution = $0
Deploy long term, reline solution = $10,000

Total: 10,000

The first option is the most common, however, is there really any need to go on this painful and expensive journey?

Often, relining installers will carry a range of products and technologies from various manufacturers. For example, at Sydney Relining we carry products from the top 3 global manufacturers approved for use in Australia – LineTEC, Rhino Linings & Brawoliner. However, as the consumer, these names and brands probably mean as much to you as the NRL ladder does to your grandmother.

So how do you decide which one is right for you? There are a few key things to consider and questions to ask when weighing up your options.

Is the installer using EPOXY resin?

EPOXY resin is the industry standard when it comes to relining. If it’s not EPOXY resin, it’s no good.

Do the materials have the necessary approval for use in Australia?

This may seem like a very basic question and an even more basic requirement, but it is well worth asking. From time to time, industry rogues have been known to offer significantly discounted prices to use unauthorised materials.

Are the materials from a notable manufacturer?

The big three in Australia are LineTEC, Rhino Linings & Brawoliner and as such, the vast majority of reputable relining companies will carry one of these brands. Therefore the more pressing question may be, which one to pick? Much like the nuances between a BMW, Mercedes or Audi, there is very little difference in these systems other than the badge and price, as all of them offer the same long terms benefits. What it often comes down to is the personal preference of the installer, which in our opinion, shouldn’t be the deciding factor. At Sydney Relining, we’re technology agnostic and guarantee all of our installations for 25 years, regardless of what product we use.

If you have any questions about materials, please feel free to pick up the phone, we love to talk tech!

Big meeting at work? Kids to get off to school? No worries.

Water cleans us, makes our coffee, we’re made of it, and therefore can’t live without it.

One of the most common concerns of our customers is around the period they will have to endure without this most important of substances. Not to worry, you won’t have to.

Throughout the relining process, water restrictions are not quite as stringent as you may think. In the majority of cases, water restrictions will only start at 9 am, giving you and the family time to get properly prepared for your day and go through your morning routine. Then, once we get started, you can still use the taps so long as nothing goes down the sink, so coffee is a go! Most importantly, restrictions only apply during work hours, once we’ve left the site, it is business as usual.

This is one of many common concerns when considering a relining solution. If you have any queries, concerns or you simply want to chat, give us a call anytime and we will run you through the ins and outs.
